Jaw problems? Try Botox!
The word is out that Botox is a great cosmetic treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, but did you know Botox is an amazing therapeutic tool for patients that suffer from TMJ?
TMJ is a bit of a misnomer, but the acronymis used to describe pain and symptoms associated with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Often, Botox is used therapeutically to lessen the action of muscles associated with the TMJ, including the masseter muscle. The masseter is responsible for helping to close our jaw and helps stabilize the other muscles associated with the TMJ. Patients who are heavy clenchers and grinders often have hyperactive and hypertrophic masseter muscles and present with a square shaped jaw and head and neck discomfort.
Many patients have had experience with dentists prescribing and making occlusal/nightguards to help with the symptoms of TMJ, but it’s not rare to find that many of these patients actually grind through the guard or are still left with pain and discomfort. Botox again helps to lessen the effects of the hyperactive musculature and give the relief needed.
When choosing a provider to administer Botox treatment, be sure to find a highly qualified practitioner who uses genuine, appropriately diluted Botox. Dr. Ellen has been trained since 2012 in Botox treatments both through the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and Aesthetic Interface and Dr. Tracy Blessing. Here at Longboard Dental, we use genuine Botox direct from Allergan at the appropriate dilution so you are receiving the appropriate dosing for maximum effect.
